What more perfect example to prove my point than, Macaulay Culkin. He starred in Home Alone's 1 and 2, and probably would have been in Home Alone 3, had he not been involved in a few other things.
Before his downfall, he was regarded to as the best adolescent star since Shirley Temple. VH1 ranked him as the number 2 child in the "100 Greatest Kid Stars." He was living the dream. Making money to live off of for the rest of his life before he was even legally allowed to work. But maybe this is the problem. In 2004 he was arrested for possession of Marijuana, Xanax, and sleeping pills. He was put in rehab, and has not really been heard from since this.
Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen were little girls role models in the 90's and early 2000's. They started off on the set of full house, and continued to make their own movies such as, "When In Rome," and "Winning London." The Olsen twins developed their own clothing line, and Forbes ranked them as the 11th richest women in 2002. But things could not stay perfect for long. In 2004, Mary-Kate checked into a rehab in Utah for Anorexia. There were some beliefs that she also had a drug problem but, with confidentiality of the records at the clinic, this was never proven. Ashley was posted in the National Inquirer with her eyes half open and glazed over, accused of being high. She denied these rumors. Then Mary-Kate became caught up in the Heath Ledger death. Heath Ledger had a 15 Minute long massage scheduled and when the masseuse showed up, he was found dead in his bed, naked. Heath died of an overdose. Strangely, the masseuses first two calls were to Mary-Kate Olsen, then she finally called the police. Rumors speculated that Mary-Kate was with Heath before he died, and that they were doing drugs together. But, again this was never proven.
The Olsen twins and Culkin are not the only child stars who have been led astray. Lindsay Lohan, Demi Lovato, Jodie Sweetin, Drew Barrymore, Haley Joel Osment (The Sixth Sense), and Corey Fieldman also had problems with substance abuse after they were child stars. Miley Cyrus has also become untamed since she began her career on the set of "Hannah Montana." She had a semi-nude photo shoot, and lately her wardrobe and her songs have not been very, "Disney Channel" of her. But what is the problem? Why do child stars have a knack to get into trouble later on in life. It could be that they have so much money, and do not know what to do with it. It could also be that their early lives were run by Hollywood, and they did not get to grow up like normal kids and go into a sort of depression because of this. And, with so much time spent away from their parents, they do not get grounded like normal kids, they do not learn wrong from right, and never develop maturity. Whatever the reason, we have a problem on our hands. With Justin Bieber never saying never, and Rebecca Black being really excited about Friday, and Willow Smith whipping her hair back and forth, we could be in for more child stars going bad very soon. Only time will tell. Hopefully these next generation children will learn from the Olsen twins, Lohans, and Culkins mistakes and get it right.

Dear writer,
ReplyDeleteThe first thing that caught my eye was your title, and the picture of Culkin, which made me want to read more. I definitely agree with you that child stars are being put out there way too early. They don't get to be kids, and experience how childhood should be. Instead they are shown this totally other world full of bad influences such as bad choices, drugs, sex, and alcohol.
One thing that was pretty shocking was when you mentioned how Heath Ledger died. I had no idea how he was found, and it saddens me to think that he played all these big roles in movies and he will be remembered by dying of a drug overdose. You may think that these teen stars have all it together, but in the end, most of them end up knocked up, or addicted to something.
"Hopefully these next generation children will learn from the Olsen twins, Lohan’s, and Culkin’s mistakes and get it right." I agree with this completely. I really hope that upcoming kid stars will be lead on the right path, and not follow along the path of the child stars gone bad.
Thank you for writing about this topic, it was pretty interesting to think about. I look forward to coming back and seeing what else you have to write about. Keep up the good work!
Sincerely,

Dear Blogger,
ReplyDeleteI think its less that these kids have issues that a lot of people don't its just that theirs get plastered across the front page for the world to see. I know that I went through a party faze myself but I have the luxury of not having my business told to everyone who buys a magazine.
"This worries me because in the past kids have had a very hard time growing up when their younger years are as celebrities." I think the problem lies with the press. Kids will be kids, I'm not saying that is an excuse but its true. But these kids have the extra burden of being followed where ever they go. I know that if my personnel business was on display I would have a hard time getting a job too and a lot people would be looking down at me as well.
"Are we putting our children out there too early? " Yes, plan and simply kids aren't made to function under so much stress and attention. But you always have to worry about the greedy parents who just want to flaunt their kids and rack in the doe.
Thanks for your interesting take on this subject.

Dear Writer,
ReplyDeleteThe first thing that caught my mind was your title. I agree with you that child stars are being developed too early. " VH1 ranked him as the number 2 child in the "100 Greatest Kid Stars." I did not know that he was ranked in the top kid stars. I knew he was famous as a person , but not as a kid."The Olsen twins developed their own clothing line, and Forbes ranked them as the 11th richest women in 2002." This stood out to me because, I didnt know that the Olsen twins developed their own clothing line. As far as them being rich, I knew that but I didnt know they was ranke in the top 15. This blog was helpful, taught me some info i didnt know about the kid stars that I watched when I was young. Thank you for writing this blog I will continue to read your blogs.

Dear Writer,
ReplyDeleteI was really interested in this blog that you posted, what caught my eye was the picture you have of Culkin. I always wondered what ever happened to him since he made it big on the home alone series."VH1 ranked him as the number 2 child in the "100 greatest kid stars". I was very suprized to see this.
But i think that there should be a age limit on when kids can go into acting. This big life so early is not good for any and this is what happens to these young stars. This blog was very interesting on the topic for young actors and make me wonder what about young singers or young rappers.
Sincerely,

Dear Blogger,
ReplyDeleteFirst thing that caught my attention was your picture. And your title. You have a sense of humor, I can tell! Now, your picture made me think "Oh, just another one of those 'tobacco companies advocating to children blogs" but I am very glad I read on.
You mention all the Olson twins and Lohan and I remember being one of those girls who wished I was like them, and then they fell apart. It's true that they just fell off of the map altogether, except maybe when one does something crazy. And the mention of how Mary-Kate may have been involved with Heath Ledger, well, it shocks me. The age difference, the acts, how hidden that was, all of it.
"With Justin Bieber never saying never, and Rebecca Black being really excited about Friday, and Willow Smith whipping her hair back and forth, we could be in for more child stars going bad very soon." We all know that the press's mouth is watering at this thought, but the whole of America is in heart-ache (well, okay, maybe not so much for Justin Beiber or Rebecca Black).
And I do believe there is a strong correlation with child stardom and crazy breakdowns in the future. It is sad that we may have to watch these others go down that path as well. Hopefully, the three of those have the parents, the support, and the morality to go astray from that road.
I really loved this. As said before, watching the Olsen twins and Lohan go from great to awful was a shame. And I hope the acting industry realizes this needs to stop. Also, your voice in writing is great! It's very apparent.
